Danny Geatens lives in Williamstown, NJ where he plays for his hometown team, Bellmawr. It is his play with Bellmawr that got him noticed by the Team USA Junior Program leadership and an invite to the selection camp. Danny prepared very hard for the camp and his dream came true when he was named to the U16 Team that will be competing at the 2016 ISBHF World Junior Ball Hockey Championships in Sheffield, UK this coming July. Danny plays soccer when not sniping opposing goalies and also enjoys action movies quite a bit with Top Gun being a particular favorite. He also scored a perfect score recently on a statewide standardized scholastic test, something he is very proud of. This former multiple time tournament MVP is currently rooting for his favorite player Alex Ovechkin as he is leading the Washington Captials, Danny’s favorite team, in the Stanley Cup playoffs. We spoke with Danny to talk about his selection as a captain and his expectations for Sheffield.
Describe what it means for you to be named Assistant Captain of this team?
It is an honor to be selected as an alternate captain and help lead the U16 to the gold medal.
What are the responsibilities of a captain?
To be a leader and set a good example. Word hard and be supportive of all your teammates.
What are the keys to making sure your team will be as successful as it can be at WBHC?
Teamwork and work ethic. We need to work as a unit and win the one on one battles and back check. Conditioning and preparation will be key to our teams success.
What style of leadership will you bring?
I try to set a good example by working hard through all practices and every shift. Leave it all on the rink. On and off the rink I believe in communication with my teammates and coaches.
Who do you credit for our success as both a person and a hockey player?
My parents and family first. Being one of four boys in my house takes everyone’s commitment. I also credit various coaches i have had at all levels.
How do you prepare for games? Are there any superstitions you follow?
I listen to the same playlist before every game. I try and visualize the game before we play it. One of my superstitions is that I have to wear the same pair of socks at every game I play.
