About Orlando Youth Ball Hockey run by Derek Miller and the Orlando Ball Hall Hockey League:
Orlando Ball Hockey Youth Team strives to promote hockey in the Central Florida region. This is in predominantly in Orange, Seminole, Osceola and Volusia counties as these are the adjoining areas. This is a great way to promote team play and show kids the importance of working towards a common goal. We look to develop better individuals and hockey players to continue the league for future generations. Orlando Ball Hockey Youth attempts to instill and practice the values of good sportsmanship in all participants. In the end we are all here to have fun and enjoy our love and passion for the game of hockey. In order to achieve those goals, Orlando Ball Hockey has established a team to participate in the upcoming Orlando Solar Bears Youth Street Hockey Tournament.
The reason why we started the youth program is to build off of what we already have with the adult league. The main volunteers have been Derek Miller, John Tosado, AJ Calheta and Kyle Bokuniewicz. The league has tried a few times to get the support of having a youth league but we just weren’t getting enough volunteers. Now that we have momentum with the league as we grow the adult league it has created a different buzz. We rebranded the league in February 2016 and found a new level of support. We run the league in a democratic fashion where I have conversations with captains and let them help me shape the current and future state of the league. I have a we are all in this together mentality and really like hearing other ideas and opinions from everyone to make this the best league possible.
We have had 4 practices so far for the youth age groups from 5 -10 years olds. We have practice every Sunday at 11 am right after A league games. So far we have been able to attract nearly 20 kids in total between both teams and are looking for ways to grow. Partnering with the Orlando Solar Bears will enable our efforts to be exposed to thousands of fans on March 4 and March 12. At these events we will be working the Street Hockey tournament with refs, coaches, scorekeepers etc. We have also ordered league banners for the event and white golf shirts with our league logo on them. We will also have a booth set up in the Amway Center for the Orlando Solar Bears games against Greenville Swamp Rabbits and Utah Grizzlies. This in essence gives us an opportunity to reach an audience of over 10,000 people. As a partner to the Solar Bears our league information will also be up on Amway’s jumbo tron. We have also turned these two games into league events to have as many guys as possible join us for the games.
It may be a slow process but we are headed in the right direction and feel comfortable that the future of the league will be in good hands with our current farm system in progress.
