Sheffield, England – The United States Junior U16 Ball Hockey Team USA defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 to capture their 1st ever medal during their 1st ever World Ball Hockey Championships. The 2016 U16 squad was the first ever at that age group for the United States, and they finished the tournament on a very high note with their victory.
The game was very close with the USA jumping out to an early 1 goal lead just 16 seconds into the contest as Assistant Captain Anthony Washart took a centering pass from fellow Assistant Captain Jordan Albright to make it 1-0. Albright made a great move to get separation from the defender in Gretzky’s office and found Washart who made quick work of the Czech goaltender.
The game remained 1-0 until just under 5 minutes left in the 3rd when the Czechs finally managed to solve Robert Snyder in net for USA who was stellar throughout the tournament. The Czechs got a clean draw and their sniper beat Snyder far post off the one timer.
But the USA was not to be denied as Evan Simonetti buried the game winner with 2:17 remaining in the game, finding an almost empty night from the low circle on a terrific feed from the far boards by Hunter Temburro. Temburro’s pass was a thing of beauty and it found the stick of Simonetti in perfect position.
The USA held off a furious Czech rally for their first ever gold. Congratulations to the team and thanks to Head Coach Mike Albright and Assistant Coaches Joe Washart and Mike Malloy for their efforts in leading these outstanding young men!
